Ai no lolita

I've made a habit of listening to the MOGRA sessions that are broadcast live on USTREAM every Saturday (whenever I get the chance, anyway). Not being a clubber in the least, I don't know if I really could go there in person, and I may not be fond everything they run, but being able to listen to it while comfortably seated at your desk is convenient enough. The music is a refreshing change from the radios over here, and time and again they pick one of those anison you like but never remember. Yesterday, for example, I enjoyed the throwbacks to the early 2000s that were dis- and Venus Say, the openings to Mugen no Ryvius and Futatsu no Spica.

The best about it all, though, is the chance to discover great pieces you had never heard before. A few weeks ago, I was particularly impressed by Wonder Momo-i, and I've been watching videos of Momoi singing that song at Animelo on and off ever since. That's pretty cool. But cool doesn't even begin to describe the awesomeness of this one song we could hear at MOGRA yesterday: Ai no lolita.

See video

So, this is a 1982 image song by well-known anison singer and lyricist Yamamoto Masayuki for Azuma Hideo's manga Nanako SOS, released on 7" by King Records. Yamamoto sings in duet with his chorister Hara Yukie (not sure how old she was at the time...).

The lyrics, transcribed and translated below, are not really related to Nanako SOS itself, but the song could easily have been chosen as an anthem by the Lolicon Boom of the early 80's, of which Azuma was a prominent figure (even if the West prefers talking about his disappearance and the manga he wrote about it, Shissou nikki). That people like that could do something like that and get a major record label to release it speaks volume as to how much times have changed in three decades!

What hasn't changed, on the other hand, is the themes and imagery of lolicon discourse, which are pretty admirably captured in just a few stanzas: the tension between innocence and mischievous sensuality, the fascination with the barely pubescent female body, the hopelessly naive and yet lecherous gaze of the older man, the iconic bishoujo that are the pupil, the younger sister and the surly bad girl, the qualms of conscience and struggle with moral norms—what you'll find in Comic LO nowadys, but not many places else.

Collectors may be interested to know that the 7" record can still be snatched second-hand on auction sites if you're lucky. (Many thanks to DS様 who helped me grab a copy on YAJ!). The song can also be found on CD in one Yamamoto Masayuki compilation: Zoku Yamamoto Masayuki Sakuhin Daizenshuu. Second-hand copies can be found on the Amazon.co.jp marketplace, but prepare to dish out over ¥20000 for a copy.

Lolita of love

Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. There is a scent of milk about her.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. A kiss on her smooth skin.

(Hara) Teacher, I've been feeling strange these days.
I feel a ticklish pain in my titty.
When I watch pro wrestling, my body goes all numb.
Teacher, I'll be waiting in the sick room.

Her lips, still a bud. Her breast, just starting to form.
Her gestures, of youthful innocence. Her straight hair waving in the wind.

Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. With the warmth of a little bird.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. A peck on her silky cheek.

My little sister is in 6th grade. She's here in front of me, innocently taking a nap.
It's the first time I realized that she's not quite the same as before.
Those healthy legs basking in the sun... Somehow, they now look like those of a woman.

(Hara) Ah, poor men! So obsessed with how things work.
I pretend not to know. It's fine to swim against the pounding waves.

Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. Giving a glimpse of womanly air.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. A bite at her thin ear.

(Hara) What? Really!
    Oooh! It's so weird!
    Eek! You scared me!
    Bizarre!
    I can't believe it!
    So chill!

I know it's wrong—but my body can't lie.
It's forbidden and that's why I want to tread the land of Venus.

Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. There is a scent of milk about her.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. A kiss on her smooth skin.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. With the warmth of a little bird.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. A peck on her silky cheek.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. Giving a glimpse of womanly air.
Lolita, lolita, lolita of love. A bite at her thin ear.

me, you, this song, drunken karaoke

We need to bring in a little girl too, to sing those Hara Yukie parts.

(And hope it doesn't turn into that one-shot by Quzilax from the last LO).

Also, check out this Giant Robo MAD!

Hard to imagine this early 1980s utopia lol. Good find!

Wow.

I'm... speechless.

Someone really had to remember the lolita song...
